Frequently asked questions
- What is this?
- A free tool from TeamRetro. Two halves: an AI generator that produces themed retro templates, and a library of well-known retrospective formats with field notes on how to actually run them.
- Do I need an account?
- No. Both the generator and the library are free with no sign-up.
- How does the generator work?
- Pick a team type, a language, the number of topics you want, and an optional theme. The model produces a custom retro template you can run in TeamRetro, in Miro, on a wall, anywhere.
- Is the output any good?
- It's best at themed variations on formats that already exist — a Halloween-themed Start/Stop/Continue, a sports-themed Sailboat. For high-stakes situations (post-incident, conflict, contentious decisions) pick a curated format from the library. The AI is a fast warm-up tool, not a facilitator.
- Why a library and a generator?
- Different jobs. The library gives you a format somebody has stress-tested across hundreds of teams. The generator gives you a fresh angle when the team is bored of the same five formats. Most teams need both, just at different moments.
- Do you store my generated templates?
- Yes — every generated template gets saved under a slug so you (or anyone with the link) can come back to it later. We don't tie it to your identity because we don't have one for you, and we don't share templates with anyone. Don't put confidential information into a generator prompt; the URL is shareable.
- Is this like Miro or Mural?
- No. Miro and Mural are whiteboard tools — you bring your own template and run the meeting on their canvas. This site is the template generator and the field manual; you take the output and run the meeting wherever you want, including in Miro or Mural.
- Who picks which activities make the cut?
- Humans, with an audit-driven editorial process. We don't pad the catalogue for SEO. An activity earns a page when there's something useful to say about when it works, when it fails, and what the pitfalls look like. Marginal formats get cut.
- Why is it free?
- TeamRetro the company makes the full retrospective platform. This site is partly lead generation — facilitators who like the tool sometimes try the platform. But the catalogue is built to be useful as a standalone resource whether you ever sign up or not. The two things aren't in tension.
- Is the AI replacing the curated library?
- No. They're for different jobs. The AI gives you a fresh themed angle when the team is bored. The library gives you a format with a known shape and known failure modes for moments where the format itself is doing the work. Neither is going away.
